Benjamin Ogden holds a Ph.D. in Literature from Rutgers University, and is currently an assistant teaching professor in the College of Arts and Letters at Stevens Institute of Technology. His research interests include twentieth century fiction, global literature, psychoanalysis, and the craft of writing.

His latest book, not yet published, is an intellectual history of human courage, examining the new meanings that courage has taken on over time in light of major historical and cultural changes. How have different cultures, in different historical periods, defined courage according to their own values and moral standards? He is interested in the new meanings courage has taken on for us today, and what these fresh meanings reveal about our society’s relationship to fear and adversity.

Benjamin has published widely on twentieth century literature, including articles on Philip Roth, Samuel Beckett, William Faulkner, and Phaswane Mpe; he also has written experimental forms of literary criticism. He is co-author of the book The Analyst’s Ear and the Critic’s Eye: Rethinking Psychoanalysis and Literature (with T. Ogden), published by Routledge. He is also the author of the book Beyond Psychoanalytic Literary Criticism: Between Literature and Mind, published by Routledge in 2018. His book reviews have been published in the New York Times Book Review and the Times Literary Supplement.
